Black Kanjivaram, Korvai Border

Kanjivaram silk in black. Kanjivaram means silk woven in and around Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. The body carries paisley figures. Gold-tone zari runs through it; zari is the metallic thread the tradition is named for. Korvai means the border was made on its own loom and then locked into the body by hand. Run a thumbnail along the join and you can feel it. Most of the work sits in the pallu — the decorated end worn over the shoulder. It carries a Silk Mark tag, the Indian certification for genuine silk. Heavier, and better suited to an evening. A pink blouse piece is included.

Care	Dry clean the first wash. After that, if dry cleaning is not possible, hand wash gently in cold water without detergent and let it air dry in shade — never machine wash, tumble dry or wring it. Wash the body separately from the zari border and pallu, which may be dyed differently. Store it wrapped in cotton cloth rather than plastic, somewhere cool and dry, and unfold it every few months to let it air. Iron through a thin cotton cloth on medium heat, never directly on the silk or the zari. (Supplier's care guidance.)
